Ryan Arsenault • keyboardist, Navigation Systems Specialist

January 2nd, 1978 • Ryan Joseph Arsenault is born in San Diego, CA. Although he is raised in the state of surf, it will be almost three decades until he gets a taste for the music. Until then, impromptu jams with siblings and cousins initially prompt his interest in learning to tickle the 88s.

1982 • The Arsenault family relocates 660 miles north to the small town of Redding.

1985 • Ryan becomes enamored with the cheesy yet infectious pop melodies of the mid 1980s.

1987 • Ryan discovers Beethoven, Chopin, DeBussy, and other masters after his mother buys him a used $2 cassette of classical music from a gas station bin marked “clearance.”

1988 • Ryan begins piano lessons. Within a few years, a growing and unhealthy obsession with Beethoven leads to imitative fashion tragedy. Mother is worried.

1991 • Ryan hears “Purple Haze” for the first time. Bewildered, he has no idea what to think of it, believing it to be “funk.” Subsequent snooping around his parents’ house yields the discovery of never before seen Santana, Cream, and other classic rock records, gathering dust in the garage. Ryan wonders why his parents are so afraid to be cool…

Late 1991 • A brief flirtation with gangsta’ rap in the style of NWA, Too Short, and Ed O.G. and da’ Bulldogs. Ryan soon grows out of the phase, but not before “keepin’ it real” by the Christmas tree with plenty of “Ho... Ho... Hos!”

Summer, 1992 • Interest in piano temporarily fades as Ryan begins to think (mistakenly) that guitar is much more “cool.” Over the next four years, Ryan becomes a certified rock ‘n roll fan while teaching himself guitar. Images of the Seattle “alt rock” scene soon adorn his bedroom walls; flannel shirts become the staple of his wardrobe. Ugh…

February 1997 • Ryan joins the Army. Piano takes a back seat due to its inconvenient size and lack of portability; Ryan flirts with the idea of becoming a guitar player throughout his service. Wardrobe improves slightly, believe it or not.

March 2001 • Ryan arrives in Tampa for his final military assignment, at MacDill Air Force Base. Studies in piano recommence as he hooks up with Latin pop/rock band Point 6 in its formative stages. Point 6 is Ryan’s first real band experience outside of stoned high school jams and unrefined drunken Army sing-a-longs.

January 2004 to present • Recruited by Mark Warren into the Vodkanauts during the band’s first major personnel turnover. Wears a dual hat as keyboardist for both the ‘Nauts and Point 6 until June of that year, when the latter recruits a full-time replacement.
